1925年，一个年轻的音乐家Marthe，决定离开乡村去往魁北克学习钢琴。面对自己越来越差的健康状况，她决定嫁给最近丧妻的邻居来换得她所需要的旅费。在到达那个城市后，她租了一间阁楼的公寓并开始了自己的新生活，在她新认识的波希米亚的朋友的陪伴下，Marthe过着自由的生活并对自己有了新的认识，并在一位黑人单簧管演奏家Oliver的帮助下很快发现了爵士乐中的快乐。在过了几个月后，这种狂热的城市生活方式开始暴露出了一些困难而Marthe也面临着一些艰难的决定......
